The East Midlands Energy Saving Trust advice centre has been working with Kettering Library to launch an energy monitor pilot scheme.

January 2010 - The scheme allows library users to borrow energy monitors with their library cards. The launch was attended by members of the Energy Saving Trust advice centre, who were providing advice on energy efficiency to visitors of the library.

	Energy monitors show householders how much electricity appliances are using and therefore how much money they are costing per hour. The monitors use average energy prices to calculate the cost, but they can also be set using actual prices provided by the household's energy supplier in order to provide a more accurate estimate.

Kettering Library has 50 hand held monitors that library users will be able to borrow with their library card for three weeks. This initiative is part of the Energy Saving Trust scheme, which will be rolled out county-wide if successful.

Principal librarian Anne Lovely said: "It raises awareness of exactly how much electricity you are using and if there's anything you can do to reduce it. People are especially aware of the cost during the recession and at this time of year."

Denise Marsdon, Centre Manager of the East Midlands Energy Saving Trust advice centre said: "By making energy monitors available to all library members in the area we can help hundreds of residents to identify where they can save energy in their homes, which in turn will reduce their fuel bills and help tackle climate change."
