Case Study
Identifying energy efficiency improvements
Hestia carries out home energy efficiency surveys
December 2009 - Hestia has been working with Rutland County Council to identify energy efficiency improvements in poorly-performing private sector housing, using the National Home Energy Rating (NHER) scheme and Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) calculations.
Hestia had previously collected survey data on behalf of Rutland County Council in relation to National Indicator 187 (NI187), which monitors fuel poverty by measuring the percentage of people receiving income-based benefits living in homes with low energy efficiency ratings. The survey involved homeowners completing a questionnaire about their own house and results were analysed to give a SAP rating for each property.
Funding was made available by the council to pay for energy efficiency improvements so the NI187 data were studied to identify poorly-performing houses (those with a low SAP rating).
Home visits were carried out by Hestia where a full on-site SAP survey was conducted and potential improvements identified.
SAP ratings were calculated for the existing property and also for the property if the recommended measures were implemented. The amount of carbon dioxide saved per year and the potential reduction in household fuel bills were also calculated. |

Rutland County Council are implementing a rolling programme of funding based on Hestia's analysis and measures including new boilers, thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) and cavity-wall, loft, internal and external wall insulation are to be installed.
